Did you know the average American may gain 6 pounds during the Holiday season? Not only is a 6-pound in 6-weeks Holiday weight gain unhealthy, but it can sabotage all your hard work during the Autumn and summer months.

Why do we put on weight? There are several reasons. Here’s the truth about Holiday weight gain and how you can avoid it with Dr. Colbert’s 21 Day Detox and Fast.

Study Shows Average of 6-Pound Holiday Weight Gain

A study survey conducted in 2018 of over 2000 respondents found that (1):

45% planned on not trying to eat healthy during the Holiday season

44% plan on eating multiple Holiday dinners in one day

33% were okay with eating so much on Holidays they feel sick

40% typical require looser clothes after a Holiday meal

54% don’t plan on exercising at all through the

Only an estimated 12% will get through the end of the year without adding pounds

33% have already decided on their New Year’s Resolutions; these include exercise, eating healthy, self-care, saving money, and learning a new skill

Unfortunately, the data tells a dismal story. If this sounds like a recipe for disaster to you, you’re right.

The Truth About Holiday Weight Gain

Holiday weight gain typically occurs because many adults see the last 6 weeks of the year as a great excuse to overeat, slack off on exercise, and become more sedentary in general.

It’s 6 weeks of letting go of healthy habits that causes the weight gain, and not a couple extravagant meals.

Instead of finishing the year strong, many people are ready to cozy up and quit during December. They might order donuts or eat cinnamon rolls for breakfast on an ordinary day. Snacks may become Christmas cookies rather than a healthy choice. They often plan to undo any weight gain once they set their resolutions for the New Year.

New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Undo Holiday Weight Gain

The problem? There is a mountain of evidence that shows New Years’ Resolutions don’t work. Most people completely abandon them before January is over, often just after one week (2).

The mentality of feast now and resolve later, for 6 weeks, leaves many adults in a cycle of perpetual weight gain, year after year at worst. Or at best, a cycle of gaining and losing the same pounds over and over again.

Stop the Cycle with Detox

This Holiday season, you can stop the cycle. Many years, by the time we get to December, we feel tired, lethargic, and unmotivated. Dr. Colbert’s 21 Day Detox and Fast can help you:

Feel energized, vibrant, and youthful rather than feeling like you want to quit

Avoid eating toxic, fat-building foods throughout the season

Omit starchy, belly-fat-adding refined carbohydrates and sugars

Forego processed foods that induce inflammatory reactions

Rid your body of the toxins and harmful substances that build up throughout the year

Omit foods that drag down your energy and cause glucose peaks and valleys

More Tips to Avoid a 6-Pound Holiday Weight Gain

Again, while most people focus on the foods eaten on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, or another Holiday, these are not the main culprit for Holiday weight gain. The issue is the entirety of the season of overeating and being sedentary. To stay strong, lean, and on track this year, try these tips.

Join Dr. Colbert’s 21 Day Detox and Fast. While it may seem hard to join in at the end of the year, this is one of the best times! Following a program will help you stay on track and give you the extra boost you need to do so.

Focus on healthy eating for the 6-weeks season, and allow yourself some grace on the actual Holiday days.

On the Holidays, enjoy all the different foods you’d like. It’s a celebration after all. But, there’s no need to stuff yourself. This only leaves you feeling unhealthy and lethargic. Instead, take reasonable portions and enjoy every bite.

If you’re gathering with others, bring a dish that’s both healthy and delicious. Make sure you have options available in which you feel good.

During Holiday feasts, eat slowly. Put your fork down between bites, take a drink of water or tea, and really enjoy the meal. Not only is eating slowly much better for your digestion, it will also help you avoid grossly overeating.

Bottom Line

Even if the average American will gain 6 pounds this Holiday Season, you certainly don’t have to! Stay on track this year with Dr. Colbert’s 21 Day Detox and Fast, and finish it stronger than ever.

Do you believe you have a sluggish metabolism? Does it seem more challenging for you to maintain a healthy weight than for others? Have you given up hope that you can meet your goals because your metabolism is slow? We can help! You can make changes that will affect your body’s health from your cells to your organs to your whole body. You can make lifestyle changes and eat a fast metabolism diet.

Believe it or not, there are things you can do to change you metabolism. It’s not your genetic fate to be overweight. There is hope.

In fact, your diet can alter your metabolism in one of three ways. It can:

Alter your hormone balance to improve metabolism

Improve the health of your cells so they are more insulin sensitive, for example, thereby improving fat loss

Directly increase your body’s calorie output

How?

It’s simpler than you might think. Here’s how food affects metabolism, and how you can eat a fast metabolism diet.

Is Metabolism Set in Stone?

If you’ve been told metabolism is simply how much you burn based on your sex, age, weight, etc., you’ve been misled. This is not your metabolism. This is is your Basil Metabolic Rate (BMR) or Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR).

BMR is, in fact, only affected by your age (BMR decreases as age increases), weight (BMR decreases as you lose weight), body fat (BMR decreases with more body fat), and gender (males naturally burn more than females).

But your metabolism? That’s a different story.

Metabolism Vs. BMR

The whole of “your metabolism” is a huge system. It encompasses the consumption, breakdown, storage, and/or use of food as energy. There are many factors that contribute to one’s metabolism.

In fact, your metabolism relies on the health of your hormones and enzymes. These compounds influence the storage and breakdown of the nutrients, the cycle of hunger and feeling full, and the efficiency of metabolic processes.

If you’ve struggled to obtain a healthy weight in the past, these hormones and enzymes may or may not be working well in your body.

What’s more, their work is influenced by the health of your whole body, systems, tissues, and cells. Your cells’ health is directly influenced by nutrients, foods, and lifestyle habits.

Cellular Health and Metabolism

While it may sound silly, your metabolism begins with the health of your cells. At a cellular level, you may not be healthy enough to effectively lose fat because an unhealthy or impaired metabolism is dragging you down.

You’ve likely been told to simply eat less and exercise more.

But, even if you eat the same amount of calories and exercise the same as a person who is at their goal weight, your body may respond very differently. Instead of burning the foods you eat, your body may choose to store more fat. This is a health issue, and it starts with your cells. If your cells are resistant to insulin, which is common if overweight, your cells may resist fat loss.

Unfortunately, although this situation is quite common, it is often not discussed. In fact, a recent study found that over 70% of overweight and/or obese women had altered insulin sensitivity (1).

Hormones and Your Metabolism

Other hormones also affect your metabolism. Increased levels of stress increase cortisol. Cortisol increases resistance to insulin. Lack of sleep and unnatural sleeping pattern can affect blood sugars, cortisol, and insulin. In addition:

Eating at the wrong times of day, like in the middle of the night for shiftwork, affects insulin and fat storage.

Being sedentary for long stretches of time can cause the enzymes responsible for breaking down and storing fat to be activated.

The hormones that affect hunger and satiety (ghrelin and leptin) can be affected by cellular health and diet. They can alter metabolism.

Specific food ingredients can work like addictive substances to cause us to consume more and more without ever feeling a “full” feeling (ie. sugar).

There’s good news! Foods, nutrients, and lifestyle habits can affect your cells’ sensitivity to insulin. You can change this! You can join us in a fast metabolism diet.

What Foods Encompass a Fast Metabolism Diet?

There are 3 parts to a fast metabolism diet.

First, you must fast from foods and nutrients that drag metabolism down.

Second, you can eat foods that are known to help your body work better and improve cellullar health.

And lastly, you can use intermittent fasting to help control hunger and intake without negatively affecting metabolism.

Foods That Drag Your Metabolism Down

The number one enemy of your metabolism is refined carbohydrates in processed foods. Without a doubt.

Sugars are dragging you down. This includes straight sugar, sugars from other sweeteners, fruit juices, and white starch from grains.

When you eat any of these, they become sugar in the body. The more sugar that enters the bloodstream, the more it needs to be stored in the cells as fat. This does 3 things. It:

Increases fat storage

Requires more insulin to be pumped out into the body

Damages cellular health by making cells less sensitive to insulin

As time goes on, the body stores more and more fat, cells become unhealthy, and it becomes harder to lose fat. A sluggish metabolism starts with sugar and processed foods. You must detox from these.

Foods That Improve Metabolism

Since we’re talking about improving cellular health in order to improve metabolism, we need to think about how nutrients affect cells.

A great way to nourish cells is to eat foods high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients. Build your diet off of natural, real, whole foods like vibrant vegetables, fermented green powders, spices like turmeric, ginger, garlic, cinnamon, black pepper, and a small amount of beans and fruits.

Next, eat healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil, fish and fish oils, avocados, coconut oil, and more. Stop overeating proteins and sugars and replace them with these fats. This alone can support insulin sensitivity and metabolism (2, 3) health. In fact, omega-3s have been shown to increase fat loss compared to other nutrients.

Next, drink plenty of clean water each day. Your body needs water to support cellular health and digestion. You can also use green tea and black tea for an extra metabolism boost.

Lastly, pay close attention to gut health. Use fibers like insulin and psyllium husk daily. Add probiotics from fermented foods and/or supplements. Fibers and probiotics have a direct effect on calorie output, hormone balance, and cellular health (4).

Intermittent Fasting and Your Metabolism

Intermittent fasting is an effective tool for achieving a healthy weight. How? It simply supports your whole-body health and metabolism, from hormones to cardiovascular health to your immune system.

An intermittent fasting diet combines a calorie deficit, improved cellular health, and a cycle of fasting and feeding that promotes fat loss without the body adapting and conserving itself. This lack of adaptation helps the body continue to work towards a healthy weight in the long-term (5) because it supports metabolism rather than slowing it down.

After a night of sleep, you woke up this morning to start your day. What did you do? Did you think about habits to support immune function? Did you proactively improve your health with your actions? Or, did you fall into a default mode to just get through it?

If you’re running on default, you can make lifestyle changes to revitalize your health, energy, and life. These start with the immune system. You don’t have to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars to do it, and you can start right now! In fact, here are 10 easy and free habits to support immune health. Plus, an invitation to join a 21-day health-changing program to detoxify your body and support immune function and whole-body health.

How Can Habits Support Immune Function?

There are a few different ways lifestyle habits can affect immune function.

First, they can reduce inflammatory actions and oxidative stress in the body. Next, they can activate immune cells directly. Third, they can indirectly affect your immunity. For example, high blood sugars are associated with increased infection risk, while controlled ones are not.

Lastly, and on the other side, they can negatively impact immune function by diminishing the health of immune cells or degrading the body’s overall health.

Your daily habits matter. Throughout each day, you can choose to support your immune function. Make your habit choices wisely.

10 Free Daily Immune Habits

1. Free Habit #1: Gratitude When You Wake

How can you prioritize your health and immune function right when you wake up? You can be purposeful to start the day with gratitude. Whatever lies ahead in the day, you can be grateful for something or someone to start.

How does this support immune health?

Gratitude is one of our daily immune support habits because it can reduce stress and cortisol. Cortisol increases inflammation in the body. What’s more, gratitude can improve sleep while reducing stress.

A study of 400 individuals found that writing gratitudes during the day and/or before sleep improves both the quality and duration of sleep (1). Another study found that gratitude was linked to a 10% improvement in sleep and a 19% decrease in sadness levels in patients with health issues and insomnia (2).

For an extra boost, combine your time of gratitude with meditation. Focus on the moment, the day, and those things for which you are grateful. Be present in these thoughts, not thinking ahead or behind. Incredibly, this sort of mindful meditation can stimulate the immune system. Its benefits include improvements in specific markers of inflammation, cell-mediated immunity, and biological aging (3).

2. Free Habit #2: Ice-Cold Shower for Better Immune Function

Not everyone enjoys an ice-cold shower or burst of cold water in the morning. But for those who can stand it, it will support immune health!

How?

First, cold showers are linked to an improved immune system. A recent study from the Netherlands found that cold showers significantly reduces sick days in workers. In fact, 30 seconds or more of cold showering per day reduced sick days by 29% in the study. Additionally, more than half the participants decided to continue the cold-shower practice after the study since they were convinced by the results (4).

Why would cold water improve immunity? It’s thought that cold-water-stress induces the production of catecholamines, which may play a critical role in supporting the immune system.

3. Free Habit #3: Get Outside into the Sunshine Early

There are many benefits to getting outside. And, the earlier you do it, the better. Sunshine and time outdoors supports immune health, for free! They:

Increase vitamin D production: Optimal vitamin D levels are associated with fewer seasonal illnesses. What’s more, optimal vitamin D levels support health throughout the body, from bones to skin to organs.

Improve melatonin levels, especially if you’re out in the early hours after waking. Why does this matter for immune function? Optimal melatonin improves sleep, and sleep is directly beneficial to the immune system.

Improve mood, which decreases cortisol to support health and immune function.

Get outside whenever you can, and aim for early hours if possible.

4. Free Habit #4: Daily Hydration for Health and Reduced Cortisol

Did you know that fluid restriction and dehydration may increase cortisol in your body? This becomes especially true if you are participating in an outdoor activity (5).

To reduce cortisol and therefore inflammation, hydrate your body regularly.

As a bonus, you’ll promote overall cell health and skin. One recent study has shown that increasing water consumption by 2 liters per day improved skin condition and physiology, even in those who already consumed high amounts of water. The researchers concluded that this increase and improvement in skin health would likely have the most positive effect on those with lower daily water consumption (6).

If you want to take the immune and health benefits even further, drink green tea for part of your daily hydration.

5. Free Habit #5: Focus on Immune Support Foods: Anti-Inflammatory, High-Antioxidant, and Healthy Fat Foods

Throughout the day, choose foods that are anti-inflammatory and full of antioxidants. These foods include:

Fish and seafood

Healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil, avocados, MCT oil powder, and more

Vibrant vegetables and small amounts of fruits

Cacao, spices, and herbs such as ginger, garlic, basil, and more

Potent greens and herbs like spirulina, wheatgrass, milk thistle, and more

Sound expensive for a list of free habits? Consider this: You have to eat anyway, so being more mindful about your food is a switch, not an addition. What’s more, there are many wonderfully inexpensive foods that are high on the list. Black pepper, whole or ground ginger, turmeric and/or garlic cloves, spinach, broccoli, and more are concentrated in immune-supporting nutrients and don’t cost much at all.

6. Free Habit #6: Move Your Body

Exercise provides a powerful 3-punch combination of immune function, health, and healthy aging. It:

Modulates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in the body by supporting neuroprotective action, increasing circulating of anti-inflammatory markers, and improving antioxidant defenses (7).

Promotes overall body composition and healthy weights. Unhealthy weights are associated with a decline in immune function.

Decreases blood glucose. High blood sugars are linked to worsened infections.

7. Free Habit #7: Laugh and Enjoy Healthy Relationships

What do healthy relationships and laughter have to do with immune function and overall health?

Incredibly, the Harvard Study of Adult Development has shown that good social relationships promote physical and mental health, provide a buffer against loneliness, increase longevity, and foster happiness. The Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found similar results. This means less anxiety and cortisol, and better health outcomes.

Next, laughter further reduces cortisol, increases dopamine, and increases endorphins. These chemicals decrease discomfort, cortisol (8), and depressed moods (9) while elevating cellular health.

8. Free Habit #8: Starting Mid-Evening, Employ Intermittent Fasting

Around 7 pm in the evening, consider starting a daily intermittent fast to support your health and immune function.

Amazingly, there are many documented benefits to intermittent fasting including:

Immune function support (10)

Improve cholesterol markers

Reduced triglyceride levels

Improved aging

Healthy weight changes without negative cellular adaptations

Reduced blood sugar abnormalities

In fact, many studies have shown that intermittent fasting supports healthy aging, brain health, heart health, and blood sugars (11).

To add intermittent fasting to support immune health, aim to fast 15-16 out of the 24 hours per day. Simply finish eating dinner at 7 pm each night, and fast with only non-carbohydrate liquids (like coffee) until 10 am or so.

9. Free Habit #9: 7 or More Hours Per Night: Sleep

Good quality sleep has many health and aging benefits. These include:

Reduced daily cortisol

Healthy immune function

Better melatonin levels

Less depressed moods

Less inflammatory reactions

Healthy body weight

Healthy heart function

It’s a cycle. Good sleep begets good sleep, and lack of sleep increases cortisol for up to 24 hours which negatively affects sleep again (12). Lack of sleep has also been shown to reduce mental performance and alertness while increasing inflammation and cortisol (13).

10. Fast from from Detrimental Foods and Detox the Body Regularly

Here’s another habit that may seem like it’s not free. But again, it’s just a matter or trading out one type of food for another, so really, it’s a net “0.”

It’s time to reduce sweets, sugars, and refined carbohydrates, omit processed food fats like soybean oil, and help your body detox from the build-up of toxins and chemicals.

You can detox and fast from these harmful foods and substances. Join Dr. Colbert’s 21 Day Detox and Fast today!

Whether you realize it or not, your liver desperately needs you. It needs you to take its health seriously and know how to care for it. Your liver works overtime, around the clock to filter blood, help with digestion, and remove toxins. You can help it. Have you had your milk thistle today? Start today and give your liver a boost with the ultimate liver cleanse diet and milk thistle.

Why Milk Thistle?

Milk thistle is a prickly plant native to Europe. It was introduced into North America by early colonists and is now found throughout the eastern United States, California, South America, Africa, Australia, and Asia (1). The active ingredients in milk thistle are a group of plant compounds collectively known as silymarin (2). Silymarin compounds are known to be strong antioxidants, antivirals, and anti-inflammatories (3, 4, 5).

But, how does this help your liver and why does it need help anyway?

Here’s the story of your liver, what it does for you each day, and how you can give it some love with an ultimate liver cleanse diet.

Your Liver’s Story: Sorting and Filtering

Weighing in at about 3 pounds and setting on the right side of your abdomen, your liver is busy all day every day. Its functions are crucial to your health and life. Every time you take a bite or drink, your liver is ready and waiting.

When you eat, your food and drinks begin their digestion journey in your mouth. You chew and chew, and start to break down foods. Then, the food and drinks make their way down your esophagus to your stomach. Here, food is further broken down both chemically (by acid and enzymes), and mechanically (by churning). Once ready, the broken-down nutrients will make their way to your intestines. There, enzymes dismantle the nutrients further into absorbable sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids. Your intestines absorb the nutrients and send them to the liver.

The Mail Room

Now, have you ever seen a busy post office or mail sorting center? Your liver is the mailroom of the body. It has about 500 workers, and each has one job. As long as you give the workers a substance they know and can work with, the liver functions well. Overwhelm them, or give them foreign, chemical, or harmful substances, and it takes a toll on the workers. The toxins can build up.

Your liver “mail-room” takes in the nutrients, sorts them, and send them out to the body. The nutrients are sent out through the blood to cells and organs to be turned into usable energy, to be part of biochemical reactions (in the case of many vitamins and minerals), to help and repair cells, or to be stored. Your liver must be healthy to get this right.

What’s more, as it sorts, your liver also filters. It filters out toxins from foods, chemicals, and medications, and detoxifies the blood. Lastly, beyond all this, your liver helps your body maintain healthy blood sugars by not allowing them to go too low. It stores a bit of glucose it can send out in an emergency.

This is the around-the-clock hard work of your liver. The more stress the liver is under due to too many toxins, high and low blood sugars, and more, the more it can get worn out.

How Can Milk Thistle Help?

Milk thistle supports healthy liver function.

In fact, many people with liver damage and illness use milk thistle supplements. It’s been found to support healthy liver function after a liver is injured by acetaminophen, carbon tetrachloride, radiation, iron overload, phenylhydrazine, alcohol, cold ischaemia, and Amanita phalloides. (1). What’s more, it can provide protection to the liver against toxins (6, 7), and support liver function in those with inflamed and/or damaged livers (8).

How?

While the exact mechanism is not known, experts believe the silymarin compounds promote liver health. As your liver is working hard for you, it can become damaged when it filters out toxic substances. It’s thought that milk thistle’s antioxidant free radical damage and offer protection.

Milk Thistle Supports the Health of Other Organs

Milk thistle doesn’t stop with the liver. It also:

may help protect neurons and support healthy brain function while aging (10, 11)

stimulates bone mineralization (12, 13)

decreases skin inflammation and blemishes (14)

promotes insulin sensitivity (15)

supports healthy immune function

In addition to being part of the ultimate liver cleanse diet, milk thistle promotes whole-body health.

Of note, pregnant women, those allergic to milk thistle, people with blood sugar abnormalities, and others should discuss the use of milk thistles with their personal medical professionals.

More Ways to Help Your Liver

There are a few more things you can do to support healthy liver function. These include:

Limiting excessive carbohydrates and sugars in the diet. Every time you eat too many carbohydrates and sugar, your liver has to turn them into fatty acids for the body. Overworking your liver with sugar may harm it over time.

Choosing healthy monounsaturated fats as your main source of oils and fats. Specifically, use extra virgin olive oil, avocados, and other omega-9 fats in cooking and eating.

Limiting or avoiding alcohol. Alcohol intake directly affects the liver and requires it to work overtime to detoxify your blood.

Eating foods with fiber including vegetables, nuts, seeds, psyllium husk, and inulin.

Avoiding sugary drinks like soda.

Doing your best to maintain a healthy weight.

Each day you can choose to support your liver with healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. And now, you can choose our ultimate liver cleanse diet.

What you eat has an impact on the strength of your body’s defenses. Some foods and drinks support healthy immune function and help you fight off harmful invaders. There are other foods that weaken your immune function. It’s vital to know which help, and to fast from foods that harm your immune function.

How do they do harm?

Foods can be detrimental to the systems that support your immune response. Or, they can weaken your immune system directly causing chronic inflammation, overblown immune responses to allergens, or actually suppressing the cells that fight invaders.

Here are 7 foods that harm your immune function, and what to choose instead.

7 Foods That Weaken Your Immune System

1. Sugars

Sugars simply wreak havoc on many body systems, especially when consumed in large amounts. In fact, sugar can:

directly cause a latent immune response after large amounts are ingested

contribute to an unhealthy weight which can harm immune-supporting systems

increase blood sugars which can increase the risk of infection

raise the risk of cardiovascular disease which suppresses the overall health and immune response

increase inflammation, which directly and negatively impacts the immune system

In studies, it’s been found that inflammation is increased with diets high in added sugars (added to teas, sweets, etc.) and natural sugars from fruit juices (1).

Chronic inflammation is associated with a weakened immune system and illness.

Instead of Sugar Use: Do your best to simply wean off of “sweets” as much as possible. When you do want a treat, make them at home using non-sugar keto sweeteners such as stevia and erythritol.

2. Soybean Oil

Soybean oil is associated with increased inflammation. In fact, it is a concentrated source of omega-6s fats, and these fats directly work against healthy omega-3 fats in the body.

Unfortunately, soybean oil is used in almost all processed foods. It’s cheap. Soybean oil is easy to use. It’s available.

From a profit standpoint, it’s much more lucrative to use soybean oil than olive oil, avocado oil, or MCT oil in a food product. Now, it’s up to you as a consumer to be choosy and avoid it. Soybean oil is among the most potent foods that harm your immune function.

Instead of Soybean Oil Use: Whenever possible, always look for extra virgin olive oil in place of soybean oil when you’re dressing vegetables, making a sauce, etc. Why? Oleocanthal and other healthy compounds.

Oleocanthal is a special compound found in abundance in high-quality olive oils. It supports healthy immune function and overall health. In fact, it is so strong it reduces inflammation in similar strength to some medications, like ibuprofen (2). Additionally, it provides direct immune support against invaders (3).

Other great oils include avocado oil, MCT oil, and coconut oil. While soybean oil increases inflammation, MCT oil has been found to directly reduce C-reactive protein (a marker for inflammation) (4).

3. Refined Carbohydrates

We all know that sugar hurts our bodies. But, do you realize that refined, white carbohydrates do the same? Once they are in the body, the starches from pasta act much the same as those from a sugar-sweetened food.

These starches are quickly digested and can spike blood sugars just like sugar does. In turn, the risk of illness and inflammation rises.

Instead of Refined Carbs Use: Luckily, there are many great food options to use in place of carbs. In any meal, opt for healthy fats, vegetables, and protein rather than carbs. Make carb-substitutes from flours that are low-carb rather than wheat. At dinner, use non-starchy vegetables such as zucchini and cauliflower in place of rice, potatoes, and noodles.

4. Artificial Flavorings (In Place of Real Spices)

Artificial flavorings, colorings, and otherwise “fake” ingredients have little place in our food system. They are simply another cheap way for food manufacturers to make foods without having to use nourishing, real ingredients. Don’t allow it.

While some artificial ingredients only have minor effects, when used in place of real-food flavor we miss a huge opportunity to support our immune system and health. In fact, some of the strongest anti-inflammatory compounds and flavors are found in black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric.

Turmeric’s curcumin can reduce inflammation, joint pain, and provide a plethora of health benefits. Ginger can reduce inflammation, promote whole-body health, support the immune system, and relieve pain with its strong antioxidants. Black peppercorns support your immune system with potent antioxidants like piperine and anti-inflammatory compounds. . Cinnamon and cloves are not only known for being anti-inflammatory, but their cinnamaldehyde can also fight harmful invaders directly.

Instead of Artificial Flavorings: Add plenty of garlic, onions, ginger, turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and other spices. Drizzle foods with extra virgin olive oil. Choose these delicious options rather than flavorings and foods that weaken your immune system.

5. Alcohol

Although alcohol is a drink rather than a food, we couldn’t leave it off our list of foods that harm your immune system. There are quite a few ways alcohol can impair your immune system. It:

harms the healthy bacteria and microbes in your digestive system, which play a key role in immune function

damages the epithelial cells themselves in your digestive tract, which can increase the risk of intolerances, reactions, and immune system inflammation

disrupts the gut barrier, allowing more bacteria to pass into the blood from the gut

may impair the function of immune cells in the lungs and upper respiratory system, leading to respiratory issues and illness (excessive drinking)

reduces the number and function of three important kinds of cells in your immune system–macrophages, T cells, and C cells, making it difficult to fight off microbes (excessive drinking)

disrupts the pro- and anti-inflammatory functions in the liver which leads to a state of chronic liver inflammation (excessive drinking) (5)

Instead of Alcohol Use: Many drinks promote full-body health and great immune function. Start with water. It’s vital for a healthy body.

Then, green and black tea are packed full of antioxidants that fight free radicals and support healthy immune function.

Consider adding lemon juice and slices. Vitamin C in lemons is one of our most-studied and well-known antioxidants. Lemons contain vitamin C plus antibacterial components effective throughout the mouth and intestines.

Lastly, add some high-antioxidants superfoods found in Green and Red Supremefood®. Their ingredients include health-supporting beets, spirulina, and wheatgrass (6, 7, 8, 9).

6. Antibiotics in Foods

If your food comes from an animal source, there’s a chance you are consuming antibiotics that have been given to the animal to keep it healthy (6).

Unfortunately, these antibiotics and their build-up can hurt your own health by tear harming the healthy bacteria in your digestive tract. Since your digestive tract is one of the primary systems for immune health and detox, antibiotics can weaken your immune response.

Instead of Animal Products with Antibiotics: Choose wild, local, or organic animal products whenever possible. Look for statements that show no antibiotic use if buying from the store.

7. Gluten or Other Individual Intolerances

Although the majority of adults do not likely have a gluten or wheat allergy, many display symptoms of intolerance when they eat modern strains of wheat. While they may tolerate smaller amounts or ancient grains, modern wheat may cause an immune response from their digestive tract or skin.

When it comes to intolerances, gluten stands out since it can weaken and flatten the villi in the intestines responsible for absorbing nutrients (7). When these are flattened, digestion suffers, and therefore the immune system suffers as well.

In addition, any individual intolerances can cause chronic immune responses and inflammation.

Instead of Eating Foods in which you are Intolerant: Avoid any foods that elicit immune responses from your skin, digestive tract, or respiratory system. If you are not sure what foods are the problem, make sure to rotate your foods and avoid eating the same foods or ingredients every day. If you know you are intolerant of gluten, avoid all wheat products and look for wheat and/or gluten listed on the ingredients list. Use non-wheat ingredients in its place, including nut flours, fiber supplements, and more.

How to Fast from These 7 Foods That Harm Your Immune Function

You’ve got the knowledge to make great choices with nutrition. Now, deliberately choose foods that support immune health (see 14 here), and avoid these foods that harm your immune function.

Whether you’re just starting a fast and cleanse, or you’re in full detox mode, it’s extremely helpful to have a green detox smoothie recipe available. A detox smoothie should flood your body with nutrients that help it get rid of toxins and harmful substances.

How?

A green smoothie promotes detox by supporting the organs and systems that cleanse your body. It should also help your body become more alkaline, thus making it easier to detox.

Here’s one of our favorite detox smoothies. It checks all the boxes by supporting full-body health and detox throughout the body.

Chlorophyll Green Detox Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients

1 scoop Green Supremefood®

1 scoop Fiber Zone

1/4 avocado

1/2 cup berries (any kind)

1-2 cups spinach

1 tablespoon organic coconut oil

juice from 1 lemon (about 1/4 cup)

1 cup of water

organic stevia, erythritol, or another healthy sugar alternative, to taste

ice, as needed for desired texture

Instructions

Place all ingredients, except sweetener and ice, in your blender or food processor. Process until smooth. Add sweetener to taste. Add ice until desired consistency is reached. Makes 1 serving.

Nutrition info (per entire recipe): 300 calories, 20 grams fat, 9 grams net carbs (24 grams carbs, 15 grams fiber), 4 grams protein

What Makes this Green Smoothie Great for Detox?

There are many outstanding ingredients in this smoothie that support detox. In fact, all 6 detox systems in the body can benefit from this smoothie. They include your:

liver

kidneys

digestive tract

skin

lymph system

respiratory tract

In fact, the vegetables and grasses in Green Supremefood®, the inulin and psyllium husk in Fiber Zone, and the fresh fruits, greens, and healthy fats in the recipe all promote health and detox.

What’s more, our smoothie boasts a vital compound for cleansing the body. It’s chlorophyll, and it’s found in the greens, grasses, and algae. As you might remember from biology, chlorophyll is a pigment that gives plants their green color. Plants use chlorophyll along with sunlight to get their nutrients.

But how does chlorophyll help human health and detoxification? The compound, and the foods that contain it, works wonders for humans as well.

Chlorophyll for Human Health and Detox

Vegetables, grasses, and algae contain chlorophyll. Wheatgrass, chlorella, and spirulina are potent sources of chlorophyll. Spinach and parsley also contain good amounts. In supplements, chlorophyll is typically added as chlorophyllin, which is a water-soluble derivative of natural chlorophyll. This makes it easier to digest when supplemented.

Whether through supplements or natural foods, chlorophyll supports human health and detox. Here’s how:

Natural Detoxification

Chlorella, spirulina, algaes, wheatgrass, and greens promote natural detoxification in the body. Chlorophyll is one of their main agents responsible for cleansing. In fact, studies have found that these foods support the removal of heavy metals and other harmful compounds from the body (1, 2, 3).

One 2011 animal study from Japan found that mice given chlorophyll shots excreted much more mercury from their systems than the control group after exposure to it (4).

Heavy metals can accumulate from ingesting them through foods and supplements, inhaling them from the air, or working in toxic environments or with harmful chemicals.

Experts believe chlorophyll promotes cellular and blood detox by binding the heavy metals and helping the body excrete them.

In addition, chlorophyll may reduce the amount of other non-metal harmful chemicals in the body. For example, chlorophyll has been found to reduce blood levels of dioxin, a known hormone disruptor (5, 6).

Anti-Aging and Skin Health Compound

As a topical application, chlorophyll may reduce signs of skin sun damage. A study found that a topical chlorophyll gel improved skin condition for 12 days after its application (7).

What’s more, it may be effective against blemishes and enlarged pores. One study found that a gel containing chlorophyllin helped reduce facial blemishes and large pores (8). Yet another study concluded that the combination of phototherapy and chlorophyll resulted in fewer blemishes and less oily skin (9).

One of the primary ways the body deals with toxins is through the skin. As chlorophyll helps the body rid itself of toxins, it may also promote skin health.

Blood-Building Properties

Hemoglobin is often measured to assess the iron status, oxygen, and health of a person’s blood. Chlorophyll is chemically similar to hemoglobin.

In fact, researchers have suggested that supplementation with chlorophyll through wheatgrass may improve hemoglobin levels when deficient. This means better energy, health, and well-being!

Natural Deodorant

When toxins are present in your body, you may also experience more body odor.

Researchers have studied chlorophyll for its potential as a deodorant for many years. Studies have found that chlorophyll supplementation may reduce body odor from digestion (in the case of a colostomy) and skin (10, 11).

In fact, some deodorants and mouthwashes now contain chlorophyll to help reduce body odor through toxin removal.

Wound-Healing Properties

When the body is healthy, it has an amazing ability to heal itself. A 2008 review found that chlorophyll supplements promoted better wound healing, fewer wound odors, and potentially fewer infections in wounds (12).

Alkaline Environment

Lastly, chlorophyll is highly alkaline and promotes an alkaline environment in the body. How does this help with detox, cleansing, and overall health? Alkaline diets can (13):

Improve the potassium-sodium ratio in the blood, which supports bone health, muscle growth and maintenance, and healthy blood pressure

Increase human growth hormone production which supports cardiovascular health and brain health

Improve levels of intracellular magnesium which supports enzyme production, vitamin D activation, and hormone balance

As you add more chlorophyll-containing foods and supplements to your diet, you can support whole-body health, cleansing, and detox!

Potent Sources of Chlorophyll in our Green Detox Smoothie

Chlorophyll is found throughout the ingredients in our green detox smoothie. The most potent sources are found in Green Supremefood®. These include (13):

spirulina

chlorella

wheatgrass

spinach

kelp

parsley

spinach

kale

green tea

In addition, fresh spinach, lemon juice, and inulin and psyllium husk in Fiber Zone® are potent cleansing agents in our Green Detox Smoothie.

Bottom Line

There are many ways to help your body detoxify. Sometimes, what you eat can help. Other times, not eating is the answer. In fact, an intermittent fasting diet can promote detox.

Here’s how to use intermittent fasting, and why it combined with a healthy detox diet is important for whole-body health.

How to Use an Intermittent Fasting Diet

In simple terms, an intermittent fasting diet uses periods and fasting, and periods of eating, on a regular basis. Typically, people fast for 12-16 hours out of each 24-hour day when using it each day.

Obviously, this is a change from normal eating and fasting cycles in which a 6-8 hour sleeping period is the only true “fast” of the day.

To use a 12-16 hour intermittent fasting diet, it’s important to finish eating dinner by 6:00 or 7:00 pm. Then, breakfast should be delayed until mid-morning or even noon. A “fasting” time of 6:30 pm to 10:30 am is typical for a 16 hour fast.

Fortunately, you can still drink no-carb liquids during the fast. For example, coffee with MCT Oil powder and collagen will not break the fast in any significant way and can be consumed in the morning hours while you extend the fast.

How Does an Intermittent Fasting Diet Promote Detox?

1. Intermittent Fasting Supports Healthy Immune Function

Intermittent fasting supports healthy immune function. Healthy immune function is at the center of body detox.

How does fasting help?

First, it promotes stem cell function and their ability to renew and repair themselves. In fact, lab studies show that fasting correlates with fewer unhealthy cells.

As a matter of fact, one study found that 3 days of fasting can literally regenerate the entire immune system! It showed that as the body “eats up” old immune cells, stem cell activity is increased. The stem cells then begin to create new immune cells which leads to the anti-aging effects of fasting.

Next, intermittent fasting can reduce the autoimmune response. It promotes cell repair during the cellular re-feeding phase (1).

Lastly, fasting supports the production and repair of white blood cells. White blood cells are especially important in the lymph system. They fight harmful invaders and work to keep the body healthy.

Of note, white blood cell production may actually be slightly reduced during the fast itself, but then vastly increases when food is reintroduced.

2. It Promotes Insulin Sensitivity & Healthy Blood Sugars

During times of fasting, the body works to make the cell membranes more sensitive to insulin. For many people, insulin insensitivity is at the center of their metabolic and health issues. And, while a typical high sugar diet promotes insulin insensitivity, intermittent fasting promotes sensitivity and health.

Part of any healthy detox is allowing the body to balance hormones and lose fat. In fact, when there is no fuel source available in the bloodstream, the body works to improve metabolism and cellular health.

As cells become more insulin sensitive, they require less insulin when food is reintroduced, and are in a better state for fat loss.

3. Improved Cellular Autophagy and Human Growth Factor

The human body has natural cycles of cell growth, cell death, and cell autophagy (programmed cell death). This is extremely important for overall health and longevity. When you use an intermittent fasting diet, your body improves cellular autophagy (2).

Then, during this autophagy cell detox, fasting also stimulates the production of human growth hormone (HGH). HGH helps the body burn fat, repair cells, build muscle, build bone density, and age healthily.

4. Neurogenesis

Neurogenesis is the production of new brain cells. It is crucial for a youthful, healthy brain and brain cell detox.

Fasting supports neurogenesis through increased ghrelin production. This is interesting because ghrelin is typically discussed as the “hunger hormone.” It stimulates appetite.

But, ghrelin also impacts the brain. One animal study found that increased ghrelin supported better memory, learning, and neural connection production.

Fasting increases ghrelin, and ghrelin supports neurogenesis.

5. An Intermittent Fasting Diet Promotes A Healthy Weight

Intermittent fasting is an effective tool for achieving a healthy weight. A body at a healthy weight functions better, from hormones to cardiovascular functions to detox.

And, it’s not just about the calorie deficit while fasting.

An intermittent fasting diet combines a calorie deficit, improved cellular health, and a cycle of fasting and feeding that promotes fat loss without the body adapting and conserving itself. This lack of adaptation helps the body continue to work towards a healthy weight in the long-term (3).

Other Benefits of an Intermittent Fasting Diet

There are other documented benefits of an intermittent fasting diet. They include:

Optimal triglyceride levels

Healthy cholesterol markers

Improved aging

Optimal blood sugars

Fat loss without negative cellular adaptations

What good is a detox plan, without an actual meal plan and realistic food list? It can be tough to make dietary changes, but to make them without a realistic guide is almost impossible. To really succeed and make changes, you need a 21 day sugar detox meal plan.

Dr. Colbert’s 21 Day Detox is different from other detox plans. For one, it comes complete with a shopping list, recipes, and meal plan.

And, there’s a secret to its success. What’s the secret?

First of all, Dr. Colbert’s 21 Day Detox and Fast promotes full body detox and health by flooding the body with highly anti-inflammatory foods, omitting inflammatory ones, supporting the liver and digestive health, and promoting cellular detox. But that’s not the secret to this 21 day sugar detox meal plan.

In fact, the secret has nothing to do with the actual foods, but how you eat them.

The Secret to the Detox Meal Plan

Did you know that eating the same foods over and over, every meal, every day can contribute to inflammation?

And it doesn’t have to be the exact same foods, but the same ingredient. For example, many people eat wheat for every single meal. They eat cereal for breakfast, a sandwich with wheat bread for lunch, and pasta for dinner. Wheat three times per day means a lot of inflammation for many people.

The Dr. Colbert 21 Day Detox and Fast meal plan helps you avoid this, even with healthy foods. The key is the variety. Use a variety of vegetables, fruits, oils, and healthy fats, and non-wheat grains. Your body will benefit from all these different foods and nutrients, and from the lack of overdoing any of them.

What’s more, the 21 day sugar detox meal plan provides recipes that use foods from the shopping list, that support healthy immune function, healthy liver function, cellular detox and whole body health. As you support these organs and systems, your body can cleanse itself of the toxins and harmful substances it is bombarded with every day.

3 Reasons to Rotate Your Foods with Your Detox Meal Plan

Rotating your foods within the 21 day detox meal plan has many advantages. These include:

It increases the variety of nutrients in your diet.

Anytime you eat the same kinds of foods day after day, you limit the nutrients you consume. But, when you increase your variety with a rotation of foods and healthy supplements, you can vastly increase the nutrients and beneficial compounds in your diet.

A variety of healthy foods promote better metabolic responses.

A study in the early 2000s found an association between a larger variety of healthy foods and a reduced risk of metabolic illness (1). In this study, the researchers concluded that there was a lowered risk of impairment with a healthy variety of foods versus a limited food diet.

Increased food variety promotes healthy bacteria in the intestines.

Healthy bacteria colonies have been associated with a diet that includes a variety of healthy foods rather than limited foods. What’s more, healthy bacteria colonies promote detox in the body and support whole-body health.

Foods in the 21 Day Sugar Detox Meal Plan

Which foods are included in the detox meal plan?

You’ll love the foods you can eat. They include:

Organic Coconut oil, Organic Avocado oil, and Organic Extra Virgin Olive, Vegetables like Arugula, Artichoke, Avocado, Beetroot, Cabbage, Calabrese, Celery, Cucumber, Garlic, Ginger, Herbs, Kale, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lettuce, Lime, Radish,Turnips Watercress, Balsamic Vinaigrette in Organic Extra Virgin Olive oil, and much more.

What makes a good, healthy 21 day detox diet? There are a lot of choices for detox diets out there. Some of them are good. Others are harmful?

So, what should you look for in a 21 day detox diet?

Here are 5 key attributes of a healthy detox diet, and red flags for unhealthy ones.

5 Key Attributes of a Healthy Detox Diet

1. It is Based on Real Foods

Any healthy eating plan, whether a detox and cleanse or everyday meal plan, should be based on real foods for the most part. This is especially through if the cleanse lasts more than 5 days.

Real foods are foods in which you can identify the source, whether it comes from the earth, sea, or an animal. Real foods are in their natural form, or close to it with minimal other ingredients (and these other ingredients should be identifiable).

By using cleanse or detox that promotes real-food for the most part, along with some supplements, you will:

Avoid harmful diets like ones with prolonged use of only lemon water and spices

Avoid detoxes based on processed foods and ultra-processed foods

Avoid harmful ingredients like processed fats, sugars, and chemical

While some supplemental powders and pills are advantageous (see #2), the overall detox should have a foundation of real foods.

2. It Uses Healthy Supplements to Fortify the Body

Along with a real-food foundation, a healthy detox diet should encourage the use of some supplements to fill in the gaps. In fact, it’s difficult to get all the nutrients you need for a prolonged detoxing period, without supplements.

For example, Green and Red Supremefood are supplemental powders that include USDA Organic vegetables, fruits, and grasses. What’s more, both provide healthy probiotic bacteria (the Greens are fermented), prebiotics, and fibers. They are loaded with health-promoting antioxidants, phytochemicals, and nourishing compounds.

These are the types of nutrients that can get missed, even with real-foods, on many detox plans.

3. It Encourages Adequate Intake of Energy and Nutrients

On a prolonged detox, like a 21 day detox diet, it’s imperative that you obtain adequate calories (energy) and nutrients for overall health. While the total calories may be lower than you’re accustomed to, they should still be in a healthy range.

What’s more, any cleanse should magnify nutrient-dense foods, with ingredients that support digestive health, liver health, and whole-body health. If you’re only drinking lemon water, and not obtaining other nutrients for 21 days, your body will suffer and become malnourished.

Don’t fall for ultra-low calorie detoxes that last more than 5 days. Instead, look for a 21 day detox diet that includes real-foods, needed supplements, and adequate nutrition.

4. A Healthy 21 Day Detox Diet is Low-Sugar

Anyone can diet by simply removing foods. However, a true 21 day detox supports your health. If your detox removes foods but includes high-sugar recommendations (such as high-sugar fruit juices), your body cannot properly cleanse itself.

High sugar consumption is at the core of many obesity and health issues. By using a low-sugar 21 day detox diet, you’ll give yourself a chance to cleanse out toxins, sugars, and other compounds that wreak havoc on cells.

5. It Supports Digestive Health, Liver Health, and Cellular Detox

Any 21-day detox diet should support whole body health. What’s more, it should encourage healthy liver and digestive function to aid in cleansing the body. Why?

Your body has systems in place to detoxify itself. A detox diet should proactively fortify and strengthen them. Specifically, two of the most powerful systems and organs for cleansing the body are the digestive tract and liver.

A 21 day detox diet should include foods such as inulin and psyllium husk with soluble and insoluble fibers, prebiotics and probiotics. These fibers promote digestive health and healthy bowel movements (1), and are found in Keto Zone Fiber Zone.

What’s more, Green and Red Supremefood include spirulina and beets, which encourages an alkaline environment in the body for detox (2). Additionally, they provide milk thistle, which supports healthy liver function. These ingredients are vital for a good 21 day detox diet.

3 Red Flags for Unhealthy Detox Diets

On the other hand, some detox diets make ridiculous claims using harmful methods for weight changes and outcomes. Run from any detox diet that:

Encourages extremely low intake and limited nutrients for 5+ days

Causes loose stools and dehydration to promote weight change

Promises extreme or unhealthy weight change in a short amount of time, such as 50 pounds lost in 1 month

Bottom Line: 5 Key Attributes of a Healthy 21 Day Detox Diet

Did you know that sugar can literally destroy your body from the inside out? It affects your metabolism, brain, hormones, digestive health, weight, and everything in between. It’s addictive and consumed in devastating amounts. It’s time for a 21 day sugar detox

Why detox from sugar over 21 days?

In just 21 days, you can reset your habits. You can replace sugar-addiction habits with better, healthier habits based on great foods.

Ready for a nutrition overall and cleanse? Yes! You’re ready for a 21 day sugar detox.

Why You Need a Sugar Detox

Unfortunately, the average American adult consumes 17 teaspoons of sugar each day, and 57 pounds each year (1). For some it’s much higher.

In fact, some adults literally eat sugar at every meal, sometimes without even realizing it. They may not realize their sugar, salad dressing, barbeque sauce, and health-food diet snacks have added sugars.

What’s more, many are in the habit of drinking sugar. This may include dessert-style coffees, high-sugar energy drinks, sugar-loaded smoothies, and sugar-added teas.

Unfortunately, not all sugar looks like sugar. Our bodies break down almost all carbohydrates, even those you might think are healthy, and turn them into a fuel it can use: blood sugar. In fact, almost every starch you eat is sugar in your body. This means most breads, pastas, cereals, etc. are little more than sugar and result in similar outcomes.

It’s time for a 21 day sugar detox!

Many health issues may results from the overconsumption of sugar. These include (2):

Increase in Blood Sugars and Insulin

Sugar digests and absorbs into the bloodstream very quickly after you eat or drink it. Once absorbed, it makes its way to the liver, blood, and eventually, cells. is dumped into the bloodstream and finds its way to cells. Sugar in the blood is very dangerous to the body, so it tries its best to maintain steady blood sugars by sending it into cells. How?

It uses insulin. Insulin “opens cell doors” and allows the sugar in.

This is better than leaving it in the bloodstream, but can still be devastating to human health, weight, chronic disease risk, and wellness.

Increases in Insulin Resistance

The more sugar dumps into the bloodstream, and the more insulin is needed to get it into cells, the more resistant to insulin cells become. This is a horrible negative cycle, and being overweight or obese exacerbates it. What’s more, insulin resistance can cause fat gain and make it harder to lose fat.

Mood and Energy Swings

As the body tries to deal with blood sugar and insulin, the body and brain feel the ups and downs. In fact, blood sugar rises can make you feel energized, only to feel more fatigued as it moves from the blood into the cells. In those with impaired blood sugar controls, this can result in low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is linked to lightheadedness, dizziness, fatigue, and more. It can be a serious condition.

A 21 day sugar detox will energize you and help you feel balanced.

Sugar and Body Fat

With more sugar intake and potential insulin resistance, the body adds fat. Insulin itself is an anabolic hormone, meaning it builds mass (and unfortunately, not muscle mass). If insulin resistance increases, more insulin is needed each time blood sugars become too high. Unfortunately, more insulin equals more fat mass, and more insulin resistance which equals more insulin needed.

How can you stop this cycle? Start by cutting out sugar with a 21 day sugar detox.

Sugar, Insulin Problesm and More Health Issues

Obesity and insulin resistance are associated with many chronic diseases. In fact, obesity itself is considered its own chronic disease since 2013 by the American Medical Association (3). Obesity is linked to metabolic syndrome, heart disease, mental decline, cardiovascular disease (4), diabetes (5),and mortality (6). In addition, extra body weight can also negatively affect other conditions and body systems including hypertension (7),bone health, gallstones (8),and more.

Sugar Accelerates Aging and Oral Health Issues

Incredibly, high sugar diets are associated with inflammation, and inflammation can accelerate aging of the skin, cells, and brain. In fact, skin can lose elasticity when blood sugars are chronically high. What’s more, sugar does cosmetic and health damage to the teeth, aging them in appearance and increasing risk of decay.

And, it gets a bit worse. As you read above, almost all carbohydrates, whether from sugar, starches, fruits, or other, become blood sugar?

Time for Your Own 21 Day Sugar Detox
